Quantum technologies exploit superposition, entanglement and other effects of quantum mechanics to perform tasks that classical physics cannot. After decades of theoretical development, 2026 produced milestones in two very different areas: energy storage and computing.

## Quantum batteries: from theory to prototype

The idea of a quantum battery was formalised in 2013 by Robert Alicki and Mark Fannes, who showed that collective quantum operations could extract more work from a system than independent operations. Later theory predicted **superabsorption**: when many quantum systems interact collectively with light, the charging rate grows faster than the number of units, so a larger battery charges faster.
