In February 2025, AI researcher Andrej Karpathy described a new way of programming in which the developer "fully gives in to the vibes": describing what they want, accepting the code an AI model produces, and steering by feedback rather than by writing syntax. The term **vibe coding** spread quickly, and within a year it had become the name of one of the fastest-growing categories in software.

## How vibe coding works

A vibe-coding platform combines a large language model with a complete software environment. The user describes an application in natural language, for example a booking site for a hair salon with online payments. The system generates the user interface, the database schema and the server logic, runs the result in a live preview, and deploys it to the web. Every subsequent instruction, such as changing the colours or adding a login page, is translated into code changes. Behind the scenes, the platform uses the same agent techniques as professional coding tools: planning, editing, executing and correcting.

## Growth without precedent

Stockholm-based Lovable is the category's most visible company. Research firm Sacra estimated its annualised revenue at **$400 million in February 2026**, up from $250 million at the end of 2025. In August 2026 the company closed a **Series C at a valuation of $13.3 billion** (Siècle Digital, 2026). Replit, which began as an online coding environment, reached an estimated **$525 million in annualised revenue in April 2026**, up from $300 million at the end of 2025, and was valued at $9 billion after its Series D (Sacra, 2026). Replit is now extending the concept from software to general office work.
