AI and book publishing: disclosure rules, ISBNs and the future of book data
Generative AI can produce a draft book, cover and translation in hours. That has opened publishing to many new authors, but it has also filled online stores with low-quality titles, and retailers and distributors have responded with new rules.
How the disclosure rules work
Amazon requires authors publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing to declare whether new or updated titles contain AI-generated text, images or translations. Content that AI only helped to edit, refine or brainstorm counts as AI-assisted and does not need to be declared. The disclosure is internal and not shown to readers, and Amazon says it may remove content that creates a poor customer experience (Authors Guild; The Decoder). Distributor Ingram has said it may not accept books created using AI or automated processes.
Why book data matters more than ever
When millions of titles compete for attention, and when AI assistants recommend books in answer to questions, accurate metadata becomes decisive. The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) identifies each edition and format of a book, and links it to its author, publisher, price and availability across the supply chain. Clean, rich metadata helps stores, libraries and AI systems find, verify and recommend the right books.
Opportunities in publishing technology
- Metadata and ISBN services for independent authors and small publishers.
- Provenance and disclosure tools that record how a book was created.
- Academic publishing: AI tools for calls for papers, peer review management and conference submissions.
