EU AI Act 2026: transparency rules take effect and Europe needs local AI brands

The European Union's AI Act is the world's first comprehensive law on artificial intelligence. It applies in stages, and 2 August 2026 marked one of the most visible steps for consumers.

What applies from August 2026

The transparency obligations in Article 50 now apply. Companies must inform people when they are interacting with a chatbot or another AI system, and certain AI-generated or manipulated content, such as synthetic images, audio or video, must be clearly identifiable (Facephi, 2026). Enforcement of the rules for general-purpose AI models, which were introduced in August 2025, also begins.

What was postponed

Following the EU's Digital Omnibus package, the specific obligations for high-risk AI systems received new dates: standalone high-risk systems listed in Annex III from 2 December 2027, and AI embedded in regulated products (Annex I) from 2 August 2028 (Process Excellence Network, 2026). Companies therefore have more time to build risk management, documentation and human oversight, but transparency is required now.

Why local AI brands matter in Europe

European customers increasingly expect AI services in their own language, under clear European rules. A brand name in the local language signals both: a German company called "Künstliche Intelligenz", a Spanish quantum firm called "Cuántico", a French service with a French name. Local names also perform well in local search and in AI assistants answering in that language.
