Google, Meta and OpenAI all want .agent: AI names are the hottest real estate online
The biggest names in AI are now competing for domain names, too. In ICANN’s new top-level domain round, the ending .agent drew 13 applications, more than any other string. The applicants include Google, Meta, OpenAI and Alibaba, along with domain registries and a community applicant, as reported by Domain Name Wire and summarised by Robbie’s Blog on 27 October.
A contest worth tens of millions
When several applicants want the same ending, it usually goes to auction. Domain Name Wire’s Andrew Allemann suggests the .agent auction could pass $50 million, using Google’s $25 million win for .app as a benchmark. ICANN is due to publish withdrawals and changes on 17 November, and any new ending would only launch years from now.
What it says about AI names
Companies that build the world’s AI models are willing to pay record sums for an AI-related address. That is the clearest sign yet that names tied to AI and agents are some of the most valuable real estate on the internet.
