AI builders turn domains into businesses: 4 in 5 names sold this year are already live
Buying a domain used to be the first step of a long project. In 2026 it is often the last step before launch. Domain Name Wire publisher Andrew Allemann looked at the 27 domains he had sold by mid-September 2026 and found that by 1 October 22 of them, four in five, were already live websites or forwarded to one.
A clear change from earlier years
For the names he sold in 2024 and 2025, fewer than half had been developed, even though their buyers had much more time. His explanation: a few years ago a complex site needed a developer or months of coding. Now one person with AI tools can build it in days, sometimes hours, a trend often called vibe coding. When building is that easy, the domain name becomes the starting gun, and demand for good names rises with it.
Why this is good news for .ai names
- More launches, more demand. Every person who can now build an app is a potential buyer of a name.
- AI products want AI names. Many of the new sites are AI tools themselves, and .ai is their natural address.
