Branding: .ai says what you do
A .ai ending tells visitors you are an AI company before they read your homepage. For products where AI is the core, that is a free piece of positioning. A .com is neutral: it suits any business, but says nothing about the product.
Availability: short .com names are almost gone
Nearly every short, meaningful .com was registered long ago. Buying one usually means a large purchase or a compromise such as an extra word or a hyphen. On .ai, strong short names are still available, mostly on the aftermarket, at a fraction of the price of the equivalent .com.
SEO: no penalty for .ai
Google treats .ai as a generic top-level domain, not as a country-specific one, so a .ai site can rank worldwide just like a .com. The extension itself is not a ranking factor. Content, links and user experience decide your rankings.
Trust and familiarity
Mainstream users still know .com best, and some type .com by habit. In tech, finance and among investors, .ai is now familiar and often seen as a sign of an AI-first company. Who your customers are matters more than the ending itself.
Cost
Yearly renewal fees for .ai are higher than for .com, but the purchase price of a strong short name is usually far lower than for a comparable .com. Over the life of a company, the renewal difference is small compared with the value of a good name.
Owning both
Many companies start on .ai and add the .com later, or the other way round, and redirect one to the other. If your exact .com is taken by an inactive owner, a strong .ai is a perfectly good home in the meantime.
