Who Owns the .ai Domain? Anguilla, the Registry and You
.ai is not an abbreviation that someone invented for AI companies. It is the country code of a small Caribbean island, and that has some consequences for owners.

Anguilla owns the .ai country code
.ai is the country-code top-level domain of Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean with about 16,000 residents. The island earned an estimated $85.3 million from .ai in 2025, a large share of its government revenue. See the .ai revenue figures.
Identity Digital runs the registry
Since January 2025 the registry is operated by Identity Digital under a five-year agreement with Anguilla's government, which keeps most of the revenue. Before that, the domain was managed for decades by one administrator on the island.
What you own when you buy a .ai name
You register the name through a registrar, for two years at a time, and you are the registrant as long as you renew. Anyone in any country can own one. When you buy an existing name, it is moved to your registrar account; see how a .ai transfer works.
Rules to know
The registry has its own abuse rules and can suspend domains used for fraud or other prohibited content. Normal businesses are not affected, but keep your contact details correct and auto-renew on.
