How to Transfer a .ai Domain Safely (Step by Step)
Buying a domain means moving it from the seller to you without either side taking a risk. This is how a safe .ai domain transfer works, step by step.
Updated
1. Agree the price and open escrow
Once buyer and seller agree on a price, a licensed escrow service such as Escrow.com holds the payment. The seller only gets paid after the domain is in the buyer's account, and the buyer only pays to escrow, never directly to the seller.
2. Prepare a registrar account
You need an account at a registrar that supports .ai. If the seller uses the same registrar, the domain can be moved with an internal "push", which is usually the fastest option. Otherwise it moves with a transfer between registrars.
3. Unlock and send the auth code
For a transfer between registrars, the seller unlocks the domain and sends an authorisation code (auth code or EPP code). You start the transfer at your registrar and enter that code. The registrar may charge a transfer fee, which often includes extra registration time.
4. Wait for the transfer to complete
A push within the same registrar can take minutes. A transfer between registrars usually takes from a few days up to about a week. You will receive emails to approve the transfer; reply promptly to keep it moving.
5. Confirm and release the payment
When the domain shows in your account, with you as the registrant, you confirm in escrow and the payment is released to the seller. Escrow.com checks the registration records as part of this step.
6. Secure the domain
- Turn on auto-renew so the domain never expires by accident.
- Enable registrar lock and two-factor login on your registrar account.
- Update the contact details and DNS records.
